What is a Live-in Nanny/Carer?
A live-in nanny/carer is someone who looks after children or the elderly while living in your home. They may take sole or shared responsibility for care, working alongside a parent or partner. Although having someone live in can feel daunting, it offers significant advantages. Families enjoy more flexibility, as live-in nannies/carers typically work longer hours and often include evening babysitting. They are also willing to travel with the family, and there’s no concern about lateness due to weather or transport issues. Additionally, there is no time or money lost on commuting.
What are the accommodation requirements?
Live-in nannies/carers need their own space and privacy. Ideally, they should have their own bedroom and bathroom, although in some cases, they may need to share a bathroom with the children or adults. Additionally, separate accommodation may be provided as part of the nanny/carer’s package. The room should be furnished and equipped with a television and ample storage space. It is important to clearly outline house rules from the beginning, and these should also be included in the contract.
What about food for the live-in nanny/carer?
The nanny’s food is provided and paid for by the employer. The employer should discuss the types of food that the family normally purchases. The nanny should share her food preferences and any special dietary requirements she may have. Additionally, the nanny is entitled to request certain foods, as long as they are within a reasonable budget set by the employer.
What are the duties of a nanny/carer?
Nannies are responsible for tasks related solely to the children, such as bathing, dressing, preparing nutritious meals, and maintaining the children’s clothes and toys. They ensure play and common areas are kept clean and organised. Nannies promote an active lifestyle by arranging playdates, attending classes, and organising outings. They foster development through creative activities, reading, and learning, and may also help with homework or teach skills like a second language or a musical instrument. Nannies also drive the children to school and activities.
Carers, on the other hand, provide physical care, household assistance, and emotional support. Their duties include helping with dressing, bathing, medication, and socialising. A live-in carer also helps with household chores, encourages engagement in outside activities, and offers companionship. The role can vary depending on the client’s needs, from assisting with complex medical conditions to supporting elderly individuals with daily tasks. At Mindful Care Trust, we tailor each live-in care placement to meet the unique requirements of every client, ensuring they receive compassionate, personalised care.
What is the difference between an aupair and a nanny?
Nannies and au pairs both provide childcare support within a family but in different ways. A nanny is typically a professional and trained employee who receives a salary for their childcare work. In contrast, an au pair is a young person, typically between 18 and 30 years old, who does not have any dependents. They may not have prior childcare experience or qualifications and live with a host family as a member of their household. They are expected to have a legal visa that allows them to stay up to two years. They provide childcare for up to 45-50 hours per week. This arrangement not only allows the au pair to immerse themselves in a different culture but also allows the host family to learn about the au pair’s culture. Their primary duties are centered on caring for children and include: general child care (playing with children, potty training, and teaching children to clean up after themselves), meal preparation, transportation to and from school, homework help, household tasks, pet care and communication with parents and other caregivers about the children’s activities, needs and development.
